Painter 8, Take Two!

Okay! I really appreciate the cats who sympathize with my version dorama-- So after getting tips, today at lunchtime, I tried again to adjust more settings in my new version of Painter.

Here are the results... I put both pages together so they can be compared (and so they make more sense). Poor Miyachi doesn't get a break yet...

How's that-- a little better? I think the brush handles better now, but the backgrounds make me want to cry in frustration, like this --> (;__;)

I also learned that even *after* the paper is dry, the colors can still bleed when wettened (past participle of the verb "to wet"?), which is why Ian, Aki and Miyachi's hair got all blurry... much like real paper which gets messy if you noodle it too much. Unlike real paper though, neither hair dryer nor a tissue could help me keep it under control yet.

Right, so this weekend, it's back to 10K-- wish it luck :3

After my HD crashed, I had to install a new OS and that meant getting new software. Unfortunately I'm not getting the same results from Painter 8 that I did from my Classic Painter 6.03...

I finished drawing the next update to 10K: FINAL Stage but since I can't get the digiwatercolor to look even close to right, I haven't been able to paint it! I'm still trying to adjust all the settings to get it how I want it.

To test the new tools and adjust the settings, I painted this test page for Miyachi's Paper...

The colors are muddy, the saturation is all wrong, even if I dry it in between each layer, the colors won't glaze properly-- no matter how much I adjust the diffusion and grain, I can't get the edges to not look like this! rrrggh!!

One might say I'm a little disappointed in the changes to Corel Painter's Watercolor tools. I'll keep trying though-- (if anyone has tech knowledge about the configurations of the watercolor settings in Painter 8+, sore mo yoroshiku! :)

I'm really encouraged by the replies I got to my polls-- it really helps me to get other opinions and perspectives about my characters, na?

So I sketched these quick this weekend while brainstorming. Now it's Monday so I'm going back to working on my 10K Commotion Opening animatic plus Ninth Stage. But I can't just leave my sketchbook empty-handed after such an inspiring weekend, so I've added some more random sketches from it...

I'm kinda testing what new lettering style I want to use for it... the tenkay style looks distinctly like 10K Commotion to me, so I'm experimenting with something new for the new project. Maybe lettering like this? Maybe not... hm.

And since a few people now have asked:

my answers to the character questions were:
1. SHO is most nimble on a skateboard. Someone else saw it too, but he's partly inspired by a guy I was totally jonesing for in 9th grade, (even though I really shouldn't have been.)

2. IAN is most likely to be a stand up comedian, although not on purpose... I just think it's funny to watch him try to do most anything.

3. TOMO mediates everything when they fight. He's like their big brother (ironically). btw, "Tomo" is short for "Tomoya"(智也), not "Tomohiro"(智弘) like it says on the first sketch.

4. AKI writes music in his journal, and also in the margins of his notebooks, on his . He can't help making music wherever he goes. He's well known and everybody likes him, but he's not "popular" because there are a few things about him that no one can quite figure out.

5. Aki and Ian both would stand out at my school because we'd always notice guys who look like their clothes could come off easily-- XD ah ha ha, j/k... my friends aren't like that... maybe. ;)

Okay, I can't say any more about that story yet because #1. it's not done, #2. it'll make better sense when I've drawn the rest of the characters too and #3. The rest of 10K Commotion is going to get done this summer! Wait even then it was 10K... wow, things have been crazy.

But this week while LC was out leveling up, I did this sketch! Jidahn (Zidane) is my favorite chara though the half-monkey bit didn't appeal to me at ALL to start. He changed my mind about it :)

click on it to see the full size painting (700some x 1300), in case you have a babyphat monitor like some of my friends and can't even see 500px :)

I painted it in the same style as my Loki study from way back when.
