Painter 8, Take Two!

Okay! I really appreciate the cats who sympathize with my version dorama-- So after getting tips, today at lunchtime, I tried again to adjust more settings in my new version of Painter.

Here are the results... I put both pages together so they can be compared (and so they make more sense). Poor Miyachi doesn't get a break yet...

How's that-- a little better? I think the brush handles better now, but the backgrounds make me want to cry in frustration, like this --> (;__;)

I also learned that even *after* the paper is dry, the colors can still bleed when wettened (past participle of the verb "to wet"?), which is why Ian, Aki and Miyachi's hair got all blurry... much like real paper which gets messy if you noodle it too much. Unlike real paper though, neither hair dryer nor a tissue could help me keep it under control yet.

Right, so this weekend, it's back to 10K-- wish it luck :3

My Painter Dilemma!

After my HD crashed, I had to install a new OS and that meant getting new software. Unfortunately I'm not getting the same results from Painter 8 that I did from my Classic Painter 6.03...

I finished drawing the next update to 10K: FINAL Stage but since I can't get the digiwatercolor to look even close to right, I haven't been able to paint it! I'm still trying to adjust all the settings to get it how I want it.

To test the new tools and adjust the settings, I painted this test page for Miyachi's Paper...

The colors are muddy, the saturation is all wrong, even if I dry it in between each layer, the colors won't glaze properly-- no matter how much I adjust the diffusion and grain, I can't get the edges to not look like this! rrrggh!!

One might say I'm a little disappointed in the changes to Corel Painter's Watercolor tools. I'll keep trying though-- (if anyone has tech knowledge about the configurations of the watercolor settings in Painter 8+, sore mo yoroshiku! :)

Tales of Symphonia x 1

Break from drawing Tenkay this weekend-- it's Tales of Symphonia time-- My roommie is playing as Lloyd and I'm Genis. It's a good time, but for a while he was all about Sheena, Zelos and Raine, leaving me out of the party... so I sketched this.

I don't know if many people know of or like these charas, but now I sure do! I included Mithos, even though he's not really in our party because he's so sugoi-- MVNPC! All these characters are so colorful! Fujishima obtained the title "Elite Chara Maker".

Here's my impression of our TOS party. As usual, what I lack in drawing 5killz, I try to make up for with random text. :3

hisashiburi bandwidth!

Just a note because all the images in my sketchbook are invisible right now-- it's not "friends-only" and I didn't go back to remove them or anything... but my host is out of bandwidth this week.

Remember back when 10K first started? I used to run out all the time, and I kept upgrading until I finally had 100gigs of transfer per month, which was all I needed until all the chapters were finished-- It's been a while since my sites have completely run out of bandwidth but if anyone could do it, it'd be my beloved webcomic sempais at Penny-Arcade and their adoring masses :)

The site will reset August 1st. Then (after a paycheck or two) I'll upgrade my host again so it can support my webchaos. If you just found my sites, welcome and kore kara mo yoroshiku!

I'd put a sketch or something here since I've been playing Tales of Symphonia and I love them, but it wouldn't appear until August anyway... see you then :)

back from CCSD 2005

Sketched this yesterday before my job interview... This Annarchy, Galahad and Uncle Tycho is for the PA guys: if Ann ever appeared by chance at the 10K Commotion, she'd look about like this. Although if I tried again, I could make them look like more original. Also I sketched/painted it with someone else's computer, so it's kinda clumsy. Blaming it on the wacom settings and schtuff, heh heh [/excuses].

I always love PA, though usually Gabe & Tycho's antics don't lend themselves to my style... but how could I not draw this? So kiyute they deserve an automatic rifle. Okay Comic Con is over, which means everything I've been slacking on needs attention like ima-now!

Miyachi, v.2

The cast of Miyachi's Paper, second draft. I'll keep experimenting with the character designs, but for now I like this version a lot more than the last one.

L-R: Sho (fire), Ian (wind), Tomo (earth), Aki (water),
Miyachi (lightning), Sayaka (metal), Lia (lightning), Abeni (earth), and Erika (fire).

(The elements won't play a major role in the story, but everyone has one, for the record. Some people make note of it more than others.)

I wasn't really happy with the colors from before-- they just
didn't seem like the charas in my head while writing, na?
Then earlier this week I had a dream in which I saw the colors more clearly,
even though they're less contrasty (plus blue, green and purple skin can be weird)...
I'm still not completely decided on them, but now when I look at this line up,
these look like the charas in the story. It's easier to paint this way too.

Now we can appreciate how little Miyachi is compared to most of the seniors-- I also changed a few things that people suggested to me before... thanks guys, I think Miyachi's posse is getting better :)

...been reading D. Gray-man

whoa... I just remembered that I like to sketch and sometimes I don't even need a reason. This was last night after dinner--

I was hesitant at first but now I like D. Gray-man a lot, and especially Allen Walker because he's got such an impressive range. Great chara, plus he sports black vinyl better than any other comic book hero I know. Hoshino Katsura = added to my humbling list of graphic narrative el173.

screen test - OE

SA-weet! I'm really encouraged by the replies I got to my polls-- it really helps me to get other opinions and perspectives about my characters, na?

So I sketched these quick this weekend while brainstorming. Now it's Monday so I'm going back to working on my 10K Commotion Opening animatic plus Ninth Stage. But I can't just leave my sketchbook empty-handed after such an inspiring weekend, so I've added some more random sketches from it...

I'm kinda testing what new lettering style I want to use for it... the tenkay style looks distinctly like 10K Commotion to me, so I'm experimenting with something new for the new project. Maybe lettering like this? Maybe not... hm.

And since a few people now have asked:

my answers to the character questions were:
1. SHO is most nimble on a skateboard. Someone else saw it too, but he's partly inspired by a guy I was totally jonesing for in 9th grade, (even though I really shouldn't have been.)

2. IAN is most likely to be a stand up comedian, although not on purpose... I just think it's funny to watch him try to do most anything.

3. TOMO mediates everything when they fight. He's like their big brother (ironically). btw, "Tomo" is short for "Tomoya"(智也), not "Tomohiro"(智弘) like it says on the first sketch.

4. AKI writes music in his journal, and also in the margins of his notebooks, on his . He can't help making music wherever he goes. He's well known and everybody likes him, but he's not "popular" because there are a few things about him that no one can quite figure out.

5. Aki and Ian both would stand out at my school because we'd always notice guys who look like their clothes could come off easily-- XD ah ha ha, j/k... my friends aren't like that... maybe. ;)

Okay, I can't say any more about that story yet because #1. it's not done, #2. it'll make better sense when I've drawn the rest of the characters too and #3. The rest of 10K Commotion is going to get done this summer! RAWR, I won't rest until the Last Stage! says CLEARED! :D

thanks again to everyone for all their help and feedback :D

Sometimes a Keyblade... v.2

Okay, some people might remember last weekend I sketched Sora (and my favorite Keychain, the Ultima) from Kingdom Hearts after I beat the game-- but that was like 2am or so and I posted it about 4am. Then after sleeping and looking at it again, I felt like it really wasn't very good-- XD Some friends helped me to see what was un-Sora-like about the proportions.

And I'm really happy that some people said they liked my version of Sora, so I drew him again, but still tried not to be too Disney-fied or Nomura-esque. Anyway, I think it's an improvement :) -- Ultima Sora II.

Q: Is this Keyblade really worth drawing three times?
A: ...... :)

Riku + Sephiroth + Trash

I drew this sketch of Riku in Xana's kitchen, and then another of Sephiroth after watching all the trailers and being giggly for AC and KH2. Even after I left Fukuoka, I kept the sketch and said I'd scan and paint it one day, and the later I decided to add more (and add text explaining the insanity that we were thinking). So this is for Xana, my first doujin page of 2005-- :D

Riku + Sephiroth + Trash

</a>

I♥you, Xana ...this isn't much compared to being introduced to Gackt live, but if you ask me to draw something (even if it takes me six months) I will do it-- :D

wow, I haven't drawn anything non-10KCommotion since September? Wait even then it was 10K... wow, things have been crazy.

But this week while LC was out leveling up, I did this sketch! Jidahn (Zidane) is my favorite chara though the half-monkey bit didn't appeal to me at ALL to start. He changed my mind about it :)

click on it to see the full size painting (700some x 1300), in case you have a babyphat monitor like some of my friends and can't even see 500px :)

I painted it in the same style as my Loki study from way back when. Cold weather must make me draw heavy lines. yukon♥IX! :D

Autumn 2004 = Cowboy & Candy

I painted these today after work... sketched because I felt inspired by the slightly cooler air. And because I love shrimp and would sneak some from David if he were standing around with some! (but if you want to imagine they're eating lo mein or something, that's okay too...)

Cowboy & Candy • A Side

Cowboy & Candy • B Side

These are both 17 inch posters and once I get an apartment, I'm gonna print them and put them on my wall :3 In the meantime, I'll just look at them in my sketchbook and imagine I have a wall. :)

Seven Homonculi

I sketched these seven deadly sins, according to my current TV fave 鋼の錬金術師...

I painted this quickly the other night before bed. I know the values are sloppy and there's no clear light source or anything so I might try another later when I'm not so busy. I'm sure I'll at least be painting another of Envy, Lust and maybe Wrath... actually by the time the show ends, probably everyone. I love this show.

But what is this sketch really about? (LC and Pyre are NOT allowed to answer that.)

Candybar pwn3d me...

I found candybar.co.kr a while ago, but just today I was inspired by buddy Xana, and overcome by the urge to make a doll of Dyna. Which lead to a doll of Simon and then David and of course I couldn't just stop with those :)

Real life dolls are expensive and take up space, but playing with pixel dolls is just too much fun. Whenever I have time to kill while waiting for DVDs to burn, maybe I'll do more... :D

oh yeah, I forgot to put this actually in my sketchbook... It's not autumn yet, but I still felt inspired. btw, she's walking Black Hayate...

and spunky says I should put enough sketches here this week to put the old drawings from before I moved off the first page. I had time to sketch while waiting around this week too, so that'll be easy. And back to painting Seventh Stage :)

Hagane no TV doodles...

These were sketched last night while watching TV and chilling with Spunky. (guess what show we watched?) Now I'm using his computer. And now here's me being a fangirl--

Dear Mr. Arakawa, I really like your manga. Edo is my favorite character. I also like Roy for being a kind of father figure. Please include lots of scenes from his wedding-- :3

Dear Square-Enix, I really like your TV show. Especially the colors, which inspired me to paint a new desktop. I also think Ed looks good in jeans.

Dear Alphonse, I think you're great. I hope you and your bro can get your bodies back and so you can eat, and hug and do all kinds of stuff you haven't been able to do for a long time-- (and so Winry can chill the heck out) :D

I last put this one my site when I last moved to another country. Now another year comes to a close. (I consider July the beginning of my year.) 今年もよろしく！

All the stuff I've sketched but not scanned, and the sketches I'll do over the time when I don't have internet will be uploaded when I get moved in and do have internet.
Are you okay?

I drew this today after lunch. It's Dyna-- perhaps how he'll look in the dream sequence at the beginning of chapter 7. I drew some others of the characters too (but it'd kinda spoil the dream if I show who else is in it :)

Anyway I can't use it in the comic because in this sketch he doesn't quite have the right expression/emotion for what's going on in this scene. But I figured it's not bad and Dyna's always welcome in my sketchbook, so I painted it just now.

Now back to packing...

I love Sanae usually. I love Belle all the time! I love Ikkei second only to MZD.
no matter how dark...

I drew tenkay all day today-- I'll be sketching again tomorrow so I can't start painting that yet... but I really wanted to paint something before bed, so I did this one right quick-- with emphasis on quick, as opposed to on right :P But in case anyone needs another reason to go to Greenland of course, it's another pop'n chara that I love even if no one else knows him. This is Kajika. "先の見えない暗闇でも、足元を照らす僕の光"

I say pop'n charas fit into categories based on how hard their stage is-- From Sugary (like Sugi and Ice) to Spicy (like Yuli and Ash) to Ouch (like Roku and Hayato). So according to that scale Kajika is a flashing, allcaps OUCH. Not surpisingly, his song is by Des-ROW, which adds to his appeal, na? He looks sweet and gentle, but the notes in his stage fall to the bar like rain through a broken airship propellor.

the real Kajika? the pop'n 11 site is all flashed so you have to click here and then click "Musics & Characters", and then click "リンセイ".

I painted this just now to unwind. And try NOT to have dreams about homework or ichinensei. I feel more relaxed now and hopefully instead of ichinensei, I'll have dreams about MZD giving us the boom boom boom to our zoom zoom zoom.

*oh, I should show who the real chara is since some people aren't as psychofanatic as me. MZD is a god (like the greek or roman type)-- his tangible form is human with some slick vinyl remix skillz, but his shadow/ghost form behind him shows his supernatural tendancies. Everyone should love MZD. Although if not, I can be fangirly enough to make up for it :3

I want to take you there... We can work it from dusk till dawn...

This is from a flashback that explains how the Platinum Mark first became a team... If The 10K Commotion happens in 200X, this is them in 199X... back then, Chaser and Breakdown were a lot tanner-- they were the same complexion as Candy but they've gradually gotten lighter. I wonder if for this sequence I should make them tan again... maybe other people won't get it, but it'll look more like the 90's to me... same with Jun's hair.

Funny is that when I first started writing the script, I wrote this flashback, and then for a long time I didn't think about drawing it... it felt like "Pshaw, chapter 9 is a million years away!"... but now that I'm about 30% finished Chapter 6, suddenly Ninth Stage doesn't seem so far off. Today I felt inspired to sketch them back in the day.

it also reminds me, I'd better make up my mind about that Dyna Angelic Mix dream sequence... chapter 7 is right around the drawing board-- o_o!
